Life pre-Great War--any sources?
Does anyone have any sources they can recomend for information on everyday life in the USA in the years before the first World War? Not the things like, "who was president?" but things like the slang of the time, common occupations, popular music--all the little things that are such an important part of everyday life?

A good start would be to find books, magazines, newspapers from that era - not just for the main stories, but also for the background - advertisments, lettes to editors and the like often give a flavour of what peoples' day to day pre-occupations were. Quite a few books published then (many often appear on ebay) were devoted to household management and similar topics and these give an interesting insight as to how people lived.
There is one caveat - this tends to give a view from the middle/upper social strata of society or those aspiring to such status. |
