Hitler assassinated Sep 41 Heydrich takes over

Heydrich was seen by Hitler as his natural successor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heydrich

WI Hitler was assassinated after Barbarossa but before Pearl Harbour. I would assume the Blonde Brute would make an attempt to assume the throne. Although he was sufficiently brave and ruthless to do well in Nazis circles, would he have made a better hash of things than Hitler.

In particular would he have been mad enough to declare war on the USA. (Hitler's "Ah'll take y'all on y' fuggin basards" moment - my theory is the Fuhrer was a secret drinker on occasions - nothing else can explain such madness).

Or was Heydrich a man more blessed with big bollocks than big brains?

Heydrich was indeed a very viable candidate for the Nazi Government in the future years around 1950 onwards. But in 1941? I don't think so. How could Heydrich step over Himmler his boss to the top job? It would take a strike on the top tier of the Nazi state to have Heydrich to the top.

So if an explosion happened while lets say the top Nazi leaders were meeting and Hitler and his inner circle died then greatHeydrich is a favourite. However in 1941 there are a lot of people who would have to disappear to have Heydrich as Fuhrer.

Actually one of the only good things a person can say about Hitler pertains to his eating habits. He was a strict vegetarian, shunned and hated cigarrettes, and never drank alcohol since an incident during his teenage years (read that in John Toland's biography of Hitler). The problem was the amphetamine shots given daily by the idiot "doctor" morrell. These slowly undermined Hitler's judgement, and led to his physical and mental collapse at the end of the war.

I agree. In 1941 Heydrich was too low in the Nazi governmental circles to be a viable candidate.

OOC: What was the incident that provoked Hitler's anti-alcohol ideas? My curiosity has been piqued.

Remember, the USA was shiping weapons to the Soviet Union and UK, and its navy had orders to engage German U-boats.

Going to war with America, Hitler thought, would encourage Japan to attack the USSR. So why not go for it?

heydrich in charge if he could have pulled it off would just be plain scary Resistance cells in europe are stomped flat in 6 months.

If he plays it right the rest of the world might be a touch confused long enough for him to get peace with britain.

I seriously doubt the British would entertain the notion of peace with Heydrich.

I don't know for Heydrich was a major rival of Himmler. Kaltenbrunner who succeeded Heydrich was appointed by Himmler to specifically not be a rival for power.

The problem in all of this is that by September 41, Barbarossa was already launched and Germany's fate was set unless the German's decision to not fund the atomic bomb was overturned.
