The four knights who plotted the murder of Archbishop Beckett are struck by lightning as they approach him. The monks with him witness the event and word quickly spreads...

The knights knew, and so did the king and his immediate entourage. If Becket was anywhere near as intelligent as he is supposed to have been, he must at least have guessed.

Four fully armed knights entering the cathedral are struck by lightning (in fact, an avalanche of loose rooftiles would quite suffice) - yes, that should rattle the king quite a bit. And imagine what it would do to Becket's ego...

Becket isn't killed. Becket is so unpopular that only his committed followers believe that he was saved in this fashion (might even be whispers of black magic). He continues in his career as a grade A pain in the arse alienating everyone. He ends up in exile again. He was already fifty when he was murdered and his rigorous life style could hardly have been healthy. He dies in exile to everyone's relief and is quickly forgotten.

They're standing near each other so they're hit by a single stroke. Or the roof tiles would work too.

It really would'nt change much Prunesquallor?
