Dante's Equation by Jane Jensen
This is an original, inventive and very good novel which starts as a contemporary mystery and ends up in alternate worlds; but quite unlike anything normally discussed on this site - far more fantastic! I've posted a full review on my SFF blog.

I'll give it a read. I thought her book "Millennium Rising" was entertaining.
