Castro Assassinated 2008

January 13th 2008:
Acting President Ràul Castro while campaigning for his seat in the 2008 National Assembly elections is shot dead on the streets of Santiago by a young Cuban disillusioned with the regime.

This What if is particularly interesting due to the fact that there has never been a 3rd in line in Cuba’s succession after Ràul. All the plans and Officials are waiting after Fidel's death for Raul to take over, as he has been the official successor for decades. So what would happen if Ràul is dead and now the different officials try to step into the void with the Military in prime Position?

So with Ràul dead who would become the next Cuban leader after Fidel?

And how would Fidel cope with the massive pressure and divisions within the Cuban Government with each challenger desperate to gain his blessing?

I'm not sure whether or not the Cuban political system is strong enough to weather something of this magnitude. Maybe I'm just a naysayer, but I see almost the same result happening as Fidel himself dying or communism in general collapsing in Cuba, i.e. a huge problem. The US would go on high alert, with the Coast Guard for sure and maybe even the Navy patrolling the Florida Straits. There would be a mass exodus to the US, and Miami would go crazy.
