Chiang Kai-Shek dies at the end of WWII
Let's say that it's the final days of the war in '45, the Japanese are formalizing their surrender, and a disgruntled agent of theirs pulls a John Birch and assassinates Chiang in Chongqing.
What happens then? |

One of Jiang's top-ranking generals takes over. I suggest Sun Liren. Either the post-war negotiations with the Communists are conducted in good faith, or Sun knows when to stop after the civil war resumes, and a likely outcome is a Soviet-controlled Manchuria and a Nationalist China, a la ''China Without Tears''.
