President Alfred Emmanuel Smith
Hello Glass Onion once again. Is there anyway barring Alien Space Bats to get Al Smith elected either in 1924 or 1928?

Well here it goes. Harding doesn't die in 1923 so he is the Republican Nominee in 1924. He is damaged severely by teapot dome. (It would be like Nixon running in 76') The Democrats seeing that they have a chance nominate Al Smith. He wins a close election ousting Harding. When Harding hears the results he has a heart attack and dies Coolidge serves out the remainder of Harding's term. (I Have to keep that curse alive)

If elected in 1924, his only real issue would be over Prohibition. He was a known wet, but the problem there is that his party wasn't. Its possible that he could push Prohibition out during his presidency.
Problem is that he wasn't a very pro-active government official. None of the Conservative Democrats were. He would be basically the same as any of the Republicans once in office, a do-nothing President. He isn't any less likely to allow corruption and patronage- if anything, he is more likely to trump the scandals of the Republican governments. He was a defender of the Tammany machine after all. Of course, identifying that with a Catholic President brings up all sorts of nastiness. If he's President in 1928, expect an even less enthusiastic response to the relief of the Great Depression than Hoover gave us. He was a prominent enemy of the New deal and a member of the American Liberty League. He'll also likely use the presidential chair to meddle in New York's politics, in OTL, he took to a dislike of Roosevelt and LaGuardia. |

Possibly, although I doubt it. If it makes the Depression noticeably worse then I could see a Huey Long presidency. But I bet it would be Republicans ascendant just as OTL's Depression made Democrats ascendant. If a Democrat makes the fall, that is.
*Shameless self-plug* My TL includes Al Smith as a VP, and John W. Davis as a Conservative Democrat president. In 1932, following the Crash and Davis' response to it, the Democrats split along liberal-conservative lines. By 1936 though, the entire party has moved considerably to the left. Al Smith refuses nomination as the VP to return to NY politics. |

My Rampolla becomes Pope TL was going to have Smith become President and then be assassinated by a splinter faction of the KKK.
Instead of searching for it on this Board's archives it can also be found here: http://p069.ezboard.com/Alternative-...trongholdfrm15 Last edited by Tom_B; July 14th, 2007 at 12:05 AM.. |
