United Nations Special Ops Force

This is plenty loads of implausible- what if alongside the U.N. Peacekeepers, there was a special U.N. special operations task force designed for counterrorism and other high risk missions?

Whose jurisdiction would it be under? Who would train it and fund it? AHA HA AH AH AHA

I am distrustful of the idea of Special Forces. They need an awful lot of backup compared to the ordinary military unit. And anything they achieve seems to be merely propaganda for their home front. How can a unit of 20 or 30 men change the temper of an whole enemy country?

And that's only if they fulfill their mission. If a wheel comes off, they are trapped, and usually have to be retrieved at enormous expense and humiliation.

Finally, they have to be secret in the run-in to the operation. We are talking about the UN here. As leaky an organisation as any WW1 General Staff.

Depends what they are used for. The SAS has performed various extremely useful roles for British interests over the years. Trying to use them as regular soldiers, or just so that people can say that they're being used (cf. Gulf War of '91), now yes, that's a joke.

Operations Group Echo: Black Ops 9 may be a cool name, but UNATCO seems a more cogent fictional analogue.

Or, for that matter, Rainbow Six. But instead of a NATO-Israel project, it can be a tool of the Big 5 members of the Security Council!

UN Special Ops farce

No, it's not a misspelling. I don't know of any nation in the world with a credible SF capability that would even consider allowing them to be controlled by the UN. In fact the reaction would probably be falling on the floor laughing before a muffled "No". The muffling being due to the need to not burst out laughing whilst saying "no".

The UN Military Operations Dept is an absolute joke. It is filled with 3rd World incompetents given sinecures by their governments' so they can enjoy the fleshpots of NY on somebody else's dollar.

There's no such thing as a "UN Military Operations Dept".

That's the area that euphemistically "manages" peacekeeping operations.

Actually, just glimpsed a reference on the US Spec Ops library which mentioned a UN 'Ghost Force' specops unit.

Heck, maybe if the UN had its own rapid reaction force as proposed by the likes of ex-Under-SG Sir Brian Urquhart, such a UN standing army would have at least elite or SOF capability ?

The best way to implement this would be some kind of French Foreign Legion approach: no questions asked and a chance for redemption.
There are enough ex-special forces that would take this oppurtunity with both hands.

And who knows, maybe with a few years of succes we have the UNSC passing the United Nations Global Defense Act and we have mammoth tanks and orca's supporting peacekeeping ops around the world.

Now I think about it, for years Dr Who has had the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (which always struck me as something of a contradiction in terms.)
