President Agnew

So. . . his scandal isn't revealed, and he becomes president after Watergate. He strikes me as much more clever then Ford. . . but what do I know. What would happen? Furthermore, if the Agnew scandal is discovered then, how can the almost dead Republican party survive?

I seems like many moderate Republicans will skip town at this point. The Democrats are going to be very tempted to go for a radical at this point, and I don't think Carter would stand much of a chance at all.

As for the Republicans, either very small government Goldwaterite faction will take over, or maybe (in the case of a moderate Democrat) a Rockefellor wing. There's actually a good chance that Reagan could get the nom in 76, but don't count on him getting elected.

The Republican Party recieved a very serious blow OTL, and kept on only through Carter's incompetence. The party could easily deminish in this ATL.

Most likely a radical will get nominated in 76, but I'm thinking the moderates and many former Republicans may challenge with a more appealing candidate in the 80 primary. Early pre crazy Gordon Brown might do the trick.

Oof. I don't know that anybody would actually want the '76 Republican nomination at that point.

Further who is Agnew's VP, if he even gets around to do it? We might, finally!, see the Speaker of the House become the President.

For the Democrats? In '76? Jerry Brown would be a good candidate, Frank Church is probably there and so Mo Udell, Carter is likely there, McGovern may get in this time, Humphrey remains a possibility, Kennedy might under these circumstances.

With Nixon and Agnew hanging over their heads I can't actually see a lot of interest. There's the usual line-up of Ford, Reagan, maybe Baker, and maybe Rockefeller—but how many would go for it?
