Hitler Triumphant
read this book a couple of days ago. There seem to be several common themes in it:
Russia was just dying to jump at the chance to sign a separate peace treaty with the Nazis, and leave the west in the lurch. The Americans just couldn't understand that France couldn't be invaded in 1943. Spain was within a heartbeat of signing up with Hitler and attacking Gibralter. I have to wonder just how likely these things are. The one scenario I liked was a neutral Italy... now that seems somewhat plausible (although it required an untimely death of Mussolini).

Sorry what book are you talking about? The collection of short stories or one of those counterfactual essay collections?

Most of the scenarios were pretty good IMO, though the first one with Halifax and a Nazi England was stretching it.

I am a fan of the "neutral Italy" scenario, however, since we do have an OTL analogue -- Franco's Spain. Because of that fact, we have a solid groundline in which to base things.

Yes a neutral Italy is intriguing! No where for the British Army & RAF to conduct live training exercises with the Germans!!
BUT with Rommel not in North Africa how does he fare in Russia - teamed up with Kleist in the Souther Army Group? What impact does it have on Japan with the British more able to switch their resources East? |
