IIRC, Russian etc air-defense forces were shooting *lots* of souped-up SAMs at U2 flights, had to get lucky eventually...

They didn't have much time left to get lucky, the flights were being phased out. And if the pilot is killed it wouldn't be the propaganda victory it was in OTL.
