Peter, Paul, Thomas, John, & Mary

On the History channel they had a program about the Other Books of the Bible. One they talked about was the Gospel according to Mary, [Magdalene] In the 3rd/4th, Centuries when the church Fathers were putting together the Bible, they made a Speacial effort in Surpressing the Mary Gospel.
?WI they didn't? ?What effect would a new Testament Book showing Jesus from a Womans Veiwpoint, have?

What was in the Mary Gospel? Is it known, like the othe books of the apocrypha? or was it totally suppressed.?

Its possible we already have a woman's viewpoint in the Gospels as MM could have been W, but so could anyone and I've not heard that theory advanced much so there must be little other proof.

In any case, Christianity from the 12thc on had a very strong advocacy of women in the Cult of Mary. One of the major differences between Protestantism and Roman Catholicism to this day is the attitude to Mary. Yet it is the Protestants who allow Women Priests. The question of Women's rights and role vis a vis religion and religious functions is very complicated and involves actual doctrinal changes rather than just a differing viewpoint.

Ive read the Gospel of Mary, and if i can recall corectly, it had lots of things in it that did not quite click with the other cannonocal accounts of Christ's life, so if it was in our Bible, we wuold have a lot of confused people. Not like we dont have enough of those

The Gospel of Mary was very Gnostic, which kinda conflicts with the four canonical gospels.

They IIRC were accepted by the early church in the late 1st Century, while a lot of the "lost gospels" came from the 3rd and 4th Century.

The "Peter, Paul, and Mary" thread title is pretty witty, I think.

If you look carefully there are even differences between the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. I believe Luke is the only one that mentions Christ being born in Bethlehem. Each on varied depending upon the audience the Apostle was writing for.

Dusquene and David. I recommend anything by Elaine Pagels. She's written a book or two on the subjects. Also, there were at the local book stores-B&N and Borders as well as libraries PLENTY of books you might enjoy on the subject.
