AHC: A country self isolates

Hello,

choose any Country with a POD after WWI or WWII and make this Country self-isolate.

Think of it like an old man who looks at the other countries and says: "Oh, yes, we did this too. The follies of youth."
or
"Been there, done that."

Think for example of a Germany, which after WWII had said: "We tried two times to be the ruler of Europe, the world and we failed both times. So no more. We stay neutral and if the other countries want to enter the race of major power in any continent or world power, we do not care. We stay out of the game. we trade for what we need, we have an army thats strong enough but no more."

This self-isolation does not mean, that the Country in question accepts everything.
Example: When the US moved against swiss Banking institutes just imagine Switzerland had fought back by releasing information about black accounts to the IRS or the press. Or by closing down all their branches in the US and maybe hindering transactions by misrouting them or something like that.

So, do your worst.

This is rather vague. Depending on what exactly you mean, Austria could probably qualify. (It went pretty neutral after WWII, if only because of the wishes of the occupying powers, and didn't involve itself in the Cold War or any of the other conflicts afterwards.) If the USA and USSR could agree on a neutral Germany, it might well pursue the same path. Oh, and how about Yugoslavia? A weird hybrid of the two competing Cold War systems, the flagship of the Non-Aligned Movement... in the long term, they could probably have gained a lot by renouncing political adventures and just being friendly and trading with both sides. And then there's Albania IRL, which actually did a major show of splitting with every established socialist ideology and eventually came to realize that Albania alone represents socialism perfectly and everyone else is out to get them!!!1!

Speaking of Germany, regarding this:

What? Germany didn't isolate itself or become neutral after WWII. NATO, the EU, the Euro, the wars in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan....

EDIT: And it's not like Germany really had a choice in the matter anyway. Hell, East Germany wasn't even independent until the late 80s.

You are right.

North Korea I would rule out. They take part on the international Scene.
If I look at North Korea I always have the Illusion that they behave like a petulant child.

And if we stay with the Impression of humans, think of a human suffering from depression, bullying, burn-out and or feeling of betrayal (the countries around you Play you for a fool, rob you, do not take you seriously and are swindlers and liars and never Keep their words of honour).
Or remember April 1st? Imagine you were the victim of an April Fools prank but where you are reduced to tears and the others mock you and laugh.
OK, this is a harsh Impression, maybe too harsh.

This Country just wants to be left alone, crawling into a Corner and healing.

As I said, ever since Liechtenstein came into independent being it hasn't done much besides be a tax haven and curl up in the Swiss corner (a peaceful, neutral one if there ever was one) and manufacture nail-guns and dental equipment, alongside bearing jokes about being tiny and occasionally renting the entire nation out for corporate events.

To self isolate, a country needs secure borders and few natural allies. If borders aren't secure, they need to play the game of international diplomacy, if other states are friendly, why self-isolate.

To that end, Hows this?

After WWI, Germany goes Communist. There's a second war in the late 20s, leading to Communist domination of Europe. Britain has a nasty fascist government, the commonwealth is looking like it will go the same way.

The USA fears the new fascist dictatorships, and the Communists. They attempt to protect their own frontiers.

Mexico and much of central America are taken over as protectorates, the border with Canada is... necessarilly a bit pourous for a border between hostile states, but fortification and monitoring of it is stepped up significantly. America tries to leave the rest of the world to it.

Alternatively. What if Communism succeeds in Finland, but not Russia. The Finns then beat back White Russian forces and assert their independence. But they have no-one to trade with, and fear outside influences will corrupt their revolution. Fortunately, leading party members are convinced that worker's global revolution is inevitable. They decide to focus on creating a good example of socialism in one country, and wait for the rest of the world to catch up.
