Gran Colombia had been trudging along through the 19th Century quietly building up industry and stability, and this lasted until the Presidency of Emiliano Rodriguez. Rodriguez seemed to be like any other two-term Colombian President, but when a normal President would step down to respect the Bolivarian example, he did not. He got to his fifth election and he had friends in seemingly in all the important places, and the people got angry. In reaction, Conservatives had the third son of the King of Spain come to their nation in secret, and initiated a rebellion against the Central Government in Venezuela.

In response, the Republic took up arms against the rebels, and requested the Governor of Maracaibo send troops to aid him. The Governor claimed “I will assist no despot against those who seem better than he,” But when he realized the rebels were Monarchists, he had already sent out the message, and so he told the Conservatives he would support them, but only if they permitted Maracaibo to secede. And finally, the Oligarchs of the Amazonian and Ecuadorian States seized an opportunity they saw to no longer submit to the corrupt government and seceded as well.

Through a coalition of the secessionists and Monarchists, the rebels were able to maintain their independence from Bogota, but the Easterners were unable to supplant Rodriguez.

The Decline of the Union of Roman Republics

The URR formed in the aftermath of the war when, following the scandal of Crown Prince Leon, Tarantine Empress [1] Beatrix suspended the upcoming elections for the Imperial Parliament.
The people rioted and rallied behind the provincial republican parties who formed the socialist Roman Republic Coalition.
Defection of most of the military made the resultant civil war brief.
With the rise in PanSicilian nationalism, rapprochment with the Egyptian Caliphate, and a rift with Interkom [2], relations between the core [3] and outer republics began to deteriorate.
War broke out when the brutal suppression of riots following the repeat vetoing of greater represention for Mauretania caused said republic to secede.
The outer republics of Albania, Aragon, Hellenica, and Illyria, followed suit though the Dalmatian Coast was heavily settled by Tarantinos and violently resisted secession.
International involvement brought about a truce and a reduced URR - the outer republics were allowed to leave but Dalmatia was allowed to join as a Roman Republic, and the far eastern occupied parts of Mauretania annexed into Carthaginia.

THE BALKANISATION OF SPAIN

The Great European War resulted in the defeat of the French Empire and her Allies by the Anglo-German Federation and her Allies. Among the territories lost by France were the Balearic Islands, which they had annexed during the First Spanish Civil War. With the peace came the creation of the United States of the North (USN), comprising the Anglo-German Federation, the Netherlands, the Scandinavian nations, Estonia and Latvia.

The Third Spanish Civil War had been raging for 8 years when the USN, taking unto itself the role of ‘Policeman of Europe’, intervened and forced the various parties to a ceasefire and to a conference held in Copenhagen. The negotiations were long, difficult and acrimonious, eventually resulting in the creation of 9 independent nations within the old Spain.

Here are the flags of Galicia, the Basque Republic, Aragon, The Free Association of Catalonia & Valencia, the Kingdom of Spain and the Balearic Islands.

The other 3 nations [competition entry] are shown below: Andalusia, the Grand Duchy of Rioja and the Spanish Democratic Socialist Republic.
