Hockey/Canadian Question

We talk about Quebec seceding from Canada in 1995 quite a bit around here, but let us assume it happened, would the Montreal franchise change their name to something like the Montreal Quebeckers?

Maybe the Montreal Habitants? Their nickname is already the Habs, so why not make it official?

We wouldn't change it. Before the name came to design the habitants of the northern english Dominion, the Canadiens was the name for my people - the french-canadians. It's a name who come all the way from the New France era.

We soverignists are not that cramped over such small things.

How about Montreal Cheese Eating Surrender Monkees?

(Its just a joke, im only quoting Groundskeeper Willy from the Simpsons. dont have a heart attack. I know that Montreal is the greatest hockey team in NHL history, and this is coming from a Rangers fan. Feel free to say horrible things about the Rangers.)

Truth is a "Canadien" meant a French speaking resident of the St. Lawerence valley as far back as the 1600s. They aren't going to totally give up this name to "English Canada", even if today they are more likely to call themselves Quebecois.

Incidentally, the Maple Leaf is also a symbol that Canada adopted that comes primarily from Quebec. As is the word Canuck.

The owners might move the team and call it whatever they like.
