WI the Japanese coups of 1932 or 1936 succeeded?
In 1932 some Japanese army and navy officers and civilian right-wing activists attempted a coup which was crushed.
In 1936 primarily army officers of the radical Kodo-Ha faction attempted a coup which also failed. IIRC -the Kodo Ha emphasized spiritual qualities in military strength over technical modernization, and they saw the USSR more as the primary enemy rather than China. Crazy as OTL Japanese foreign policy was, it was implemented by those were the 'moderates' in the japanese context. If either of the radical coups had succeeded what would the effects have been? Japan being even less able to measure balance of power realties? Japan getting into some fights it can't handle even before the OTL start date of WWII, launching a fight in Asia that amounts to a "Boxer Rebellion with aircraft carriers and monoplanes...and crappy, crappy tanks?" |
