WI: Karl Ludwig chosen instead of Maximillian as Emperor of Mexico

It has been noted by many sources that Maximillian was "too liberal" to have gained conservative support and "too conservative (or rather they didn't want a monarchy) for the liberals, and was perhaps a bad choice for the position of Emperor.

But what if Karl Ludwig was chosen instead. Karl had the opportunity in the fact that, at the time the crown was offered, he would have already had issue with OTL's Franz Ferdinand.

Would he have been the right choice to at least garner him support from the conservative base?

It would not matter Juarez would still fight and would still have American support. France would not want to fight the Union army after 1865. Since the French had trouble holding Mexico in thrall against the real Mexican government. How could any one think they could handle Grant and company? The big question is does Ludwig put his money where his mouth is and stays and fights after the French run away, or does he run away too. If he does what Maximillian did he gets executed too.

Maximilian was less about fighting and more about getting Americans to immigrate to Mexico and to be all... What's that word again... Something to do with not running away from what he thought his royal duties to his subjects were... Anyways, what would the butterfly be without the false referendums shown to Maximilian about Mexicans wanting him or how they took his land in Europe without telling him first?
