As much as I hate promoting my own works, I feel like giving a shout out to my own TL, U Kahlay Katun, which is the second incarnation of a Maya-TL that's recently been given a third reboot that's yet to be updated, still doing some work. Basically, the possible result of the Maya civilization not suffering from that Collapse in the Classic period.

I'll recommend "Anahuatlacanco", "Lo, the Nobles Lament, the Poor Rejoice", and "Aigyptos Has Risen!". Others I would've nominated have already been listed.
Oh, and apparently some people liked my TL enough to give it a Turtledove last year.

The Protect and Survive spin-offs are pretty damn good. One of the best is Chipperback's account of events from a surprisingly interesting and developed and nuanced Nebraska perspective, http://www.alternatehistory.com/disc...d.php?t=211130 Read it and you shan't regret it. |

Apart from what's named already, I'll recommend the two TLs by Dr. Strangelove, Halifax by FletcherofSaltoun, stuff from Amerigo Vespucci, TLs written by Anaxgoras (especially Rule Brittania) and Napoleon's Victory by Zach.

Well, here's are some really good TLs that I absolutely recommend:
1.)Lands of Red and Gold- If you are truly interested in an exotic and unique setting, look no farther than this excellent TL, by Jared. Originally set in Australia, this TL is not yet finished but has begun to diverge into the rest of the world. 2.)Union & Liberty-This American-centric TL started out with a very small butterfly, a tiny change of wording in Andy Jackson's campaign. and it goes from there. Wilcoxchar does a great job of writing an interesting story; there are a few minor butterfly nets in some places, though, and Russia still owns Alaska as of TTL's 1906, but these shouldn't bother anybody much. 3.)Jello Biafra's Red Dawn series-A Marxist America, done very well. Very fun TL to read, especially if you may have an interest in Socialism and/or have socialistic leanings, but even has plenty of fans who aren't socialist at the least. 4.)Protect & Survive-Macragge's Cold-War era opus. POD is in September 1983 when some students get shot in East Berlin. Things escalate to the point when WWIII is declared in February 1984.....and then the nukes fly on the 21st. After that, the world finds itself in a state many had feared since 1945......and now, people must rebuild. This excellent TL has had many spinoffs, even a couple not set in the original universe....if you have an interest in nuclear war type stuff, you'll like this. 5.)Dominion of Southern America-Our very own Chief Moderator, Glen, created this TL, and it diverges in 1771 when Guy Carleton becomes governor of North Carolina. The United States survives and ends up with everything north of OTL's Missouri Compromise, and all of OTL's Canada. The D.S.A. begins to develop into an interesting place itself. The only nitpicks I have so far, personally, are the layouts of some of the U.S. states, such as Jacques, and Gitchigumee. 6.)For All Time-This classic TL diverged in 1941 when FDR died of a heart attack in D.C. Fast forward forty years, and the world has seen several nuclear wars, a civil war in France, the loss of a few holy cities, and Jim Jones as President of the United States( ), amongst other things. It does stretch plausibility to a degree but it's still a good read. 7.)Male Rising-'For All Nails' contributor Jonathan Edelstein came up with this unique and very interesting story in January of this year, and is a fantastic read, especially for those who like African country wanks. 8.)The Union Forever-This is a Civil-War era TL that diverges in 1862, and includes many unique twists such as an invasion of Peru, earlier civil rights, amongst other things. Honorable Mentions, some good, and some really good- 1.)TL-191, After the End-David bar Elias's unofficial sequel to Harry Turtledove's series. 2.)Under the Eagle Flag-This TL starts with a POD in 1821. 3.)For Freedom, Liberty, and Commonwealth-Turquoise Blue's alternate America story. Starts with a slightly different Revolutionary War, and goes on from there. Hasn't gotten all that far yet, but it already has unique features such as the Republic of Missouri, and Napoleon emigrating to the U.S. This is a somewhat underappreciated TL. 4.)Created Equal-Jefferson wins the 1796 election instead of John Adams. This TL's inactive at the moment but still shows lots of promise. It too, is underappreciated. 5.)Tomorrow's Pen is Mightier Than Yesterday's Sword-A descendant of the Adams family in 2076, travels back in time, and lands in 1774. If you like stories with ASB elements but also try to have elements of plausibility, you'll like this one. 6.)Decades of Darkness-One of the oldest TLs on this site, partly inspired by(and really better than), Steve Stirling's Draka series. Somewhat unique, quite well-written, and extremely detailed, and it started with Jefferson dying in 1809, and ends with an America in which slavery is still legal in the 1930s. Overall, it was well done, but there are a few things which some, myself included, believe could have benefitted from more and/or alternative perspectives & approaches. Even so, many will definitely like reading this one. 7.)The Story of a Party-John Fremont wins the 1856 election. Still in it's infant stages but is still an interesting read. The post style, btw, was inspired by DoD, EdT's "Fight and be Right", amongst others. 8.)The Course of Human Events-One of the best written American Monarchy TLs out there. 9.)Look to the West-This TL may remind some of For Want of a Nail; North America stays British and expands westward. Very well written TL, though I believe that the colonies stretching as far west as they do is starting to become a bit of a stretch, plausibility wise. Still, though, for fans of British Americas, this is one of the best TLs you could read. Here's the updated version, btw. 10.)Canada Wank- Dathi Thorfinnsson's Canada TL. Very nicely done, I think. 11.)A World of Laughter, A World of Tears-Walt Disney becomes President in 1952. The U.S. will never be the same ever again...... 12.)The Federal Republic of America-The U.S. is stillborn, but a similar state takes its place. General Finley's creation. (DoD fans: please don't get mad at me, I meant no harm. )

Well........
Well, it depends. Some TLs like Decades of Darkness or Look To The West, have lots of detail and have quite a few unique details that most other TLs don't. Others, like Eurofed's U.S. of the Americas and Oceania, or Union and Liberty, are more casual TLs. And some, like Tomorrow's Pen is Mightier Than Yesterday's Sword, are wild cards of a sort.
It mainly depends on personal preferences, really. ![]()

I am a bit disappointed, no-one has mentioned Zhirinovsky's Russian Empire by Pellegrino Shots.
Edit: Here is a link, i would advise anyone who hasn't read it to read it all, right now. It's that good: http://www.alternatehistory.com/disc...d.php?t=245924 |

The Stars at Night: a Texas Timeline - a Timeline about the trials and tribulations of a Independent Republic of Texas. Absolutely hysterical, one of my favorites!!!

I'd make the following recommendations for truly top-notch work:
Malé Rising, by Jonathan Edelstein. Xamm Anim, by Monopolist. Union and Liberty, by wilcoxchar. Remnants of Rome, by Zuvarq. This is just a sample, based on my personal preferences. There are countless other excellent timelines. Oh, and if you want something, fun, well-developed, and huuuge, take a look at Progress, Decline, and Hope. It's a 132-page behemoth of a collaborative timeline which is much better read on the wiki, here. I'm one of the major contributors. Cheers, Ganesha

Fear, Loathing and Gumbo on the Campaign Trail '72 was recently completed (the sequel is coming soon!) and is IMO excellent. Other than that, everything I'd reccommend has been reccommended already.
