Well, this is the election of 1892. Make sure to vote! The Confederates are hoping the Socialists will win, allowing them to build the Nicaragua Canal.

Democratic Nomination

President: Alfred Thayer Mahan, of New York
Vice-President: Thomas Brackett Reed, of Maine


Socialist Nomination

President: Edward Bellamy, of Massachusetts
Vice-President: David Hanson Waite, of Colorado


Republican Nomination

President: John St. John, of Kansas
Vice-President: William McKinley, of Ohio.

John St. John and the Republicans! John St. John is a progressive Republican, yet he also will be hawkish enough against the South to not let them turn Nicaragua into their little puppet protectorate. For moderation, the return of the Republican party and for Nicaraguan freedom, vote St. John!

Is this and the 1968 one based on that Turtledove series? If so, I've only read a couple pages of a few books, so I wouldn't know where say, the Republicans stand.

Thomas Reed was a Republican, and he was extremely anti-expansionist. Why is he teamed up with Mahan?

No matter what tl he is in he is a baddass so I vote for him.

It's hard to say because Turtledove is never exact about it, but I always assumed that (for the most part) Republicans were generally centrist in TL-191 - not Social Democrats like the Socialists but not Conservatives like the Democrats. It is my understanding that in TL-191 the Conservative wing of the Republican Party defected to the Democrats after the more Progressive/socially-orientated wing of the Republicans defected (starting with Abe Lincoln himself) to the Socialists.

However, some people also see the Republican Party in TL-191 has having evolved into a sort of Mid-West/Agrarian-based party, with much (but not all of its support in the farm belt. So, it is really hard to say.
