Galician oil reserves?
I've always heard that there were oil reserves in the Galician region. However, I've never been able to find any information on them-when they started being exploited, how big they were, when (or if) they peaked, ETC. Does anyone know about Galician oil and/or have sources on the topic?

Which Galicia do you mean? There's the Galicia in north-western Spain or the Galicia region in eastern Europe between Poland and Ukraine, I'm assuming the former but just wanted to double check.

It's got to be the one in eastern Europe, given there was oil there. Closest Spanish Galicia came was an oil spill. In 1909 it produced 2 million barrels, 5% of world production.
EDIT: And 1909 was the peak. There was a book written about the Galician oil fields. Last edited by stateless_englishman; July 5th, 2012 at 05:59 PM.. |

I meant Galicia in Eastern Europe. I highly doubt Galicia, or any part of Spain, would be able to produce oil.

At the peak, they were about 10% of the world oil production, which was much, much lower than now.

Around 1908 Galatia in Eastern Europe was helping make Austro-Hungarian Empire the Third largest Oil Producer By 1914 these fields had passed there peek and the oil was mostly drained out by the Mid 1920's.
