More US involvement in Chinese Civil War

WI the US tried to give more support to Chang in the Chinese Civil War.

I assume it would have been "Vietnam on steroids". How long would it take for opposition to grow in the US.

On the other hand could it have worked?

The US did offer a crapload of support IOTL. The US Navy had port facilities and USMC garrisons stationed all along the northern Chinese coast and routinely ferried KMT troops back and forth with transport ships. In Qingdao, IIRC, the USN was running a training school for the KMT's nascent navy as well.

But to get large scale military involvement on the order of American troops engaging in offensive combat operations, you'll have to increase the influence of the China Lobby, which is not the easiest of tasks.

The USA wasn't willing to fight in Europe, it was much less willing to do so in Asia to a serious extent. Jiang, by contrast, sought aid from both Stalin and Hitler in this timeframe. How the USA, which was never willing to pay for a big military, suddenly decides to meet Jiang's exaggerated demands for weapons he was never able to use well is a good question.
