This is actually really interesting. I can't wait to see what Portugal is doing with so much land in East Africa.

---

From the same world as my Australia & Malesia map from a few pages before, I present to you...

An Anglo-Dutch Union allows the English to settle in Dutch Guiana. This territory becomes known as Anglo-Dutch Guiana. A few decades after the Union forms, a new idea known as the "Guiana Destiny" encourages people to fight to take the entire Guiana Shield. The idea becomes popular, and soon, the U.K. is fighting against Spain and Portugal for control of Guiana. They succeed, but don't stop there. The U.K. realizes that the Treaty of the Hague was between Portugal and the Dutch Republic, not between Portugal and the U.K. And so, the Anglo-Dutch attack the former Dutch colony of New Holland again, and manage to get (most) of it.

Roughly 300 years later, the 13 Anglo-Dutch colonies in South America gain independence as one country, called Guyana and New Holland.

GIMP and Inkscape are both popular, and free (in both senses of the word). Inkscape is confusing at first, though, so I recommend LSCatilina's tutorial if you use it.

Use the pencil tool, put a dot where the start of the line should be, move the cursor to where the end should be, and shift-click.

Preview of a project I'm working on. Any suggestions for features would be greatly appreciated.

The map looks a bit busy. Perhaps if you made it larger and sized down the text it would be a bit more readable. Beyond that, though, this is high-quality work. You clearly know your way around Inkscape, and it's refreshing to see something besides raster graphics in this thread.

Yeah, that's what happens when I work at 300% magnification and have to scale back. Well, I am going for the "busy pre-GPS roadmap" look, but I'll take that into consideration.

I'm actually just starting on Illustrator, but thanks!

That's the northern half of Tyrol, which in FabR does stay German. The southern section was Italophone at any rate since before Garibaldi. The Italian claim wasn't pulled out of nowhere.

Not so. The Russians had been attacking German power in small ways since the 1880s: small, sure, but small enough to cause a substantial migration to Germany and cause a a great deal of outrage in Alldeutsch circles (admittedly said circles could get outraged about nearly anything).

During the war, the Russian government openly threw the Baltic Germans over the side: after all, there was general anti-German hysteria extending even to the quiet Mennonites of the Saratov area, which got so bad that they appear to have met the Bolshevik revolution with relief.

Special Latvian volunteers units fought for both the tsar and the reds against the Germans, domestic and foreign. And I mean they were substantially the same people in these units: they would fight for anyone if it meant getting one over on the 'barons'.

I think what Nietzsche meant was that instead of German overlords, there would be Russian overlords and not Baltic independence.

This replacement, starting very gradually in the '80s, actually benefited the Baltic majority: anyone can learn Russian even if the necessity is a painful reminder of domination; not everyone can be descended from Teutonic knights.

But what he said about nothing changing was straight-up wrong. And the Russian Revolution Mark I., which was probably coming the moment the Tsar didn't win the war in 1914, was welcomed in the Baltic and set up Baltic autonomy.

It is certainly contributing to a misleadingly straightforward narrative of Bad Russians.

Regardless of how nice the Russians were compared to the "Knights", having a foreign minority rule over you is generally not a thing of happiness and joy

But while we are at it. Do you have any specific statistics of how many Balts denounced their nationality to "become" Russians by changing their language and lifestyle?
