I never understood the "small Federal government" thing, I thought classical Liberals believed government was whole was a bad thing as it could be used to opress the people, why does it matter if it's a overarching government or a local one? I mean it's not like state governments are immune to the allure of oppressing their populaces, or at least certain groups of their populace *cough* segregation *cough*

Agreed. The aliens have always been my favorite conspiracy - along with the fake moon landing.

Really? The government which couldn't find WMDs in Iraq has successfully covered up alien contact since 1947 in Area 51? Really?

And if you think UFO nuts are easy to flim-flam (they are - just ask L. Ron Hubbard), then how about highly-educated NASA engineers. Really? The government successfully faked out - or managed to silence - literally thousands of well-educated engineers, technicians, military officials, physicists, chemists, and others? Really? And the fact that with a powerful enough telescope, you can see the Apollo sites on the moon? Really?

Much of it dates back to the founding of the Nation. It was essentially a federation of 13 republics, each fiercely guarding their internal affairs. I know states can be oppressive, but think of it like this: some people would rather oppress themselves than have California, Texas, Florida and New York deciding it for them. I picked those States because they have a much larger population than most of the other States. North Dakodans (for example) much rather do it to themselves than have it forced on them by 'East Coast liberals' in far-off New York. I don't know if I explained that very well.

Distrust isn't just limited to the Federal government. The reason the Second Amendment exists is because back when it was written, large standing armies were seen as tools of oppression, and many people prefered to keep the arms in the milita. Keeping the bulk of the Army as the National Guard isn't the worst idea ever produced.

Picture of the Apollo XI landing site; I have those.

Reading back on some of the stuff to come out of the 90s, it's almost as if the aliens were the cover up. By that I mean the Air Force was sending all these nuts off on a wild goose chase in hope of them keeping away from their stealth aircraft. As far as I know, that's the big happening at Area 51 (did they ever give it a name after declassifying a bunch of data on it?).

It's now the Groom Lake Operating Facility - and I think they test all kinds of things there. By the way my sig - 'Mike Turcotte' - is actually the name of the lead character in a sci-fi series called 'Area 51' by Robert Doherty. First internally consistant story line linking ancient astronauts and MJ12 I've ever read.

You know, I actually think the government quietly encourages the whole 'aliens at area 51' thing. It lends an aura of mystical presence and knowledge that bolsters the government's authority in some ways.

It shows a country, it is therefore a map.

Let's be honest here: The Founding Fathers were big fish in the pond of each state. But across the whole nation, only the best and brightest shone. So...

Republican primaries AH: Perry enters after Paul wins Iowa and wins NH on a hair due to the momentum from immediately entering the race, the chief Anti-Paul, and Huntsman being stronger than OTL due to Romney getting third place in Iowa (after Paul and Newt).

Hell yes, Belgium.

I tried remaking my previously posted map based upon the suggestions here. Any better? I'm thinking I might remove the logo above the key.

It says "more than 30" and then "30-40" - was the first intended to be "more than 40"?

I'm going to need a key here.

That was a stupid mistake on my part. I was messing around with the percentages and instead of making it 20-30, I made it 30-40.

It's been fixed.

Whilst on an outing to one of the museums in Denver, I noticed a map (One of those animal range ones) with an odd error, namely a huge protrusion where the Netherlands should be. This got me thinking about alternate geography, and while it may not suffer from a protrusion, here is a small finished part of what I decided to make. Now, knowing next to nothing about the way Europe's geography has changed (Except Crimea and the low countries) over time, I need a bit of input. Is this at all plausible?

PS The British land bridge is low enough that it sometimes disappears.

If you have a county by county version of the basemap, that would be a good balance between showing percentages by state or showing percentages as blobs.

Looking cool, though, whichever way you go.

Anyone got beef with the names I've given? :P

BTW, Mexican states are the same as OTL, minus Sonora, the Bajas, the Yucatan peninsula, and Chiapas. I just don't know enough about them to change them. If you have suggestions for Mexico please let me know

Find the date of your POD on the last of these images, and study what happened after. Although it's a different basemap, it should still help. Anywhere that has more population in YTL will have more states, probably, and likewsie the opposite.

Arkansas: the state so cool, they named ANOTHER state after it!

And Téjas is gonna be Texas. One because of the English-speaker influx and two because English doesn't use any diacritics.

Is there no chance of it becoming "Tejas" (with the pronunciation probably mangled into /ˈtɛdʒ.əs/)?

Does anyone have a version of this not-quite-BAM map with rivers? Because hand-drawing a border defined by the Mississippi river on a map this size is a humongous pain in the ass.
