What would need to happen to prevent the Spanish America War with a POD on or after 5 March 1897?

I suspect that it may be enough to not have the Maine deployed to Havana, but am unsure.

Regardless, what are the consequences, long-term and short term? I suspect that the U.S. still formally annexes Hawaii, and gets involved to one etent or another in China and Korea, but the specifics and other potential developments elude me.

If a moderator wishes to move this to post 1900 I will understand, but it's here because my POD is before 1900.
