Post Counts

You know, it would really cut down on the unnecessary spam if board members couldn't easily view the number of posts they've made.

You know, that's a really good idea. I don't think the board has an option to disable post counts, but I can probably go into the source code and just delete the bit that displays them.

On the List of Things to Do.

You think they do that here? I thought that alternatehistory.com was above posting just so they could have post count superiority.

How so ? Not that I'm being protective of mine, lol, I really couldn't care, but when one sees an unfamiliar name its interestng to see how many posts they've made, and then look into what they are, especially if the first post you see by them appears to be erudite and positive

Generally what I do when I see a post by an unfamiliar name involves checking out what they've written before by going to their profile. Unfortunately, for some of our members, the vast majority of their posts consist of quoting vast blocks of previous posts followed by the words "Indeed..." or "LOL " rather than anything that might tell you about their personality. Some of this is directly attributable to driving up the post counts - if members can't see how many posts they've made, or how many others have made, they probably wouldn't spam us so much, and possibly even make more worthwhile posts.

I disagree... how many people here really post that kind of thing because they want a higher post count? I don't see post count envy being a too often topic of discussion... (compared to say, homosexual innuendo)

Thet would probably just give themselves an imaginary number for a postcout.

Until today, the board had been accurately giving my post counts. But today I kept getting logged out for some reason and I had to keep logging back in. And then I noticed the number of my posts is suddenly 87 lower than it had been. Not that I'm supposed to care but maybe it indicates a software bug. Why did it happen? Also, other people's post counts seem to remain the same.
I did have multiple windows open so I could read one while the other windows were downloading, but that hadn't been a problem before.
Also, I get logged out if I leave the site. That hadn't happened before. I wonder if it's a new feature Ian put in?
Thanks.

Hey, I just suggested it to the board. Ian's the one who actually implemented the changes!

Am I the only board member who could care less about the post count, never bothering to thunderously announce via thread that I have reached X number of posts?

Straha, go easy on Leo, all he did was formulate a precisely detailed plan of operation aimed at slashing your post count, then slip Ian some cash to make it happen. So why the hostility?

There are a few, particularly members of the Olde Guarde such as yourself. My impression is that the obsession with post counts is largely a mania of the forum tyros, although that doesn't explain Straha's deep and obviously heartfelt attachment to his post count.

True but YOU don't have any moderation powers so you're a safer target for hostilities. Nothing personal. How about we just blame othniel and call it a day?
