This would be very interesting. What POD are you using to get the Republicans to splinter?

I haven't nailed down a specific POD, but the main concept of the TL is a "reverse" Civil War, wherein an anti-slavery North secedes from the otherwise pro-slavery US following the 1860 election of Jefferson Davis as president. The biggest problem I have is how to make the North weaker than the South in the first place. I suspect I may have to go into ASB territory, though I'd rather not. If you'll notice, the numbers of electors in the free states are much lower than in OTL whereas the opposite is true for the South. The Republican party splits over the issue of slavery just as the Democrats did in OTL, although again for the opposite reason (the splinter group is more anti-slavery rather than more pro-slavery). The Northern Republicans are more in favor of black rights and less in favor of staying in the Union than the main party line.

What the hell. Seems like a pretty ASB SPD-wank. Also, KVP? Kommunistische Volkspartei? WTF? CDU and CSU suddenly starting to compete? WTF?

it is not completly serious (warum schreib ich eigentlich auf englisch? ) ... Konservative Volkspartei ... economy crisis gets worse ... popular opinion moves to the left, so does SPD ... FDP radicalisize ... CDU/CSU split after fights about the lost elections and about the lost of "conservative values" ... CSU and parts of the FDP and CSU merge to the KVP (somewhere between todays CSU and NPD)

political spectrum:

left
Linke
Piraten
SPD
Grüne
CDU
KVP
right

I see ... still, why would the CSU even want to split from the CDU? As it is, they have more power despite only operating in Bavaria. If they'd split, they'd become a fairly minor party.
Other than that, I lol'd at Cem Özdemir. How long will he stay leader of The Green?

8 years with other people (Doppelspitze) ... with some major problems in the CDU its possible that the CSU could get more "friends" outside of bavaria + a charismatic and ambitous leader â la Strauß + a very populist campaign ... but it is not meant to be super realistic so excuse some not so plausible parts

It's still nice. The Pirates' position reminds me of the early Green - no one wants to ally with them ... still, we usually had a trend of the government parties making losses, hadn't we?

Point of divergence: Rick Perry stumbles on the debates later, changing the Republican no-Romney momentum to allow Gingrich to win Iowa.

Oh how I loath this lack of connection between the voter's votes and the results.

I think you've got an extra electoral vote in there. Also, whether or not Gingrich gets the nod, there's no way Ron Paul would get that much of the popular vote.
