World War III in The Man in the High Castle
What will be of the battlefields and other events? Will Italian Empire side with Germany or Japan? What will the fate of the Rocky Mountain States. And, finally, who will be the winner?
My personal guess is that some Japanese nukes succeed in destroying the Atlantropa gigantic hydroelectric plants in either Bosporus Strait or Suez. Thanks in advance! |

How about figure it out yourself before asking people. What do you think will happen in WWIII for the book?
Also, why ponder what happens in someone else's novel? Can't you come up with your own ideas, not necessarily a novel but at least a TL? |

Very lovely reply. This is a discussion board, where people discuss things. It isn't all posting timelines.

Agree with that. If you DON'T want to discuss this topic, DON'T enter it. Now you can go somewhere hotter, History_pintobean!

Assuming the same level of stockpiles of nukes as in OTL the USA/SU have, MAD scenario i guess. The japanese home islands though are even more prone to nukes due to the nature if the islands of Japan. With Germany probably extending across the Urals, there is plenty of space i guess. Still mainland germany is awfully small.
Also, any Atlantropa project basically invites a nuke or two, that's very dangerous right there. Though considering a drained mediterranean, the shock of immediately lower sea levels due to the breach of dams could send tidal waves hundreds of meters high. Might be dangerous for the japs also. In any event, i would consider the US/what remains in the continental US a sideshow. The main conventional war, if there was one, would be carried out in the wastes of Siberia and the middle east.

You can destroy the Home Islands, poison the Ganges, and irradiate all the potable water in Australia; but South America should be big enough for both Reich and Japanese holdings to survive.
However the Reich affiliated holdings hold most of modern day Brazil, whereas the Japanese hold what was previously the Amazon jungle, and then the Eastern coastal nations. So I imagine a major German offensive against the Rocky Mountain States and the massive nuking of the Pacific states would leave Japanese high command in the Americas in Peru maybe? Using the Andes to shield them from German advances from Brazil and Mexico-by-way-of-Central-America. |

Yes, Operation Dandelion was mentioned, so the Home Island should be destroyed. And will that break the Japanese chain of command? |

Back to the question, it's been at least 15 years since I last read MITHC, but I seem to remember that the balance of power seemed to be heavily in Germany's favor. Several times characters mentioned that Japan was well behind Germany in technological innovation, etc., and that a war would lead inevitably to Japanese defeat.
