It's not the being around thing, it's the "reconquering all of the Arabian peninsula, the Fertile Crescent and Egypt from the Muslims" bit that bothers people - at least those who have the impression that the POD is after, say, 700 AD. It was supposed to be Dark Ages, but I dunno if we were ever given a specific date.

He's got Roman colonies in North America. That indicates a much earlier PoD than that.
