so some one I know posted this on there facebook, so give me a POD where the US was colonizing Libya?

There is an emergency rally against the US bombing of Libya tomorrow at the White House at noon. If you can, show up to show solidarity with the Libyan people against this act of barbaric imperialism.

Instead of Ghaddafi taking over, have some other. less crazy officer take over later. Have him be like Saddam in Iraq, in general looting the country, but being a firm US ally against a more Soviet-leaning Egypt. When a popular revolt topples him sometime in the '80s, have the US invade to restore him against "Communist" (read-pro-democratic) rebels. We install even more of a puppet than before, since the previous dictator died in the revolt. Boom, neocolonialism.

You could maybe do something with the Barbary Wars, maybe have the US install a full puppet in Tripoli during the Barbary Wars and keep a connection there until the late 1800s, when we decide to flex our imperialist muscles and get real colonies to prove we're one of the big boys. We start by formalizing our protectorate over Libya in the so-called Third Barbary War.
