Space Resuce
An American space shuttle gets stranded in space in the mid 1980's and another shuttle is launched to stage a rescue. How would this affect the American space shuttle program?

You mean if it worked or if it failed?
I'm not that knowledgeable about the Shuttle, but is it feasible to just 'send one up' at a few days' notice? It was the intent originally, but the whole system strikes me as rather too fragile and high-maintenance for that. That need not doom the astronauts, though - MIR is up there, often with an operational Soyuz docked to it, and even if not, Soyuz are available at much shorter notice. It might make good press for the Empire of Evil in the early 80s and help detente along in the late. And it might provoke an earlier rethink of the whole shuttle idea.

Two scenarios. One in which it works, one in which it doesn't. A rescue attempt would need at least a few weeks to prep I'm guessing, maybe less if they really work hard at it. They wouldn't need to pick a new crew becuase there is an auxillary crew ready in case a member of the main crew becomes sick or something.

Does a shuttle have enough air and power to stay up a few extra weeks?
