Anyways if they are advanced enough to take out major metropolises I take out soucal, and that one on the East Coast that Reaches from New York to DC...

Hm - that brings up an interesting possibility.

Maybe the aliens decided to use Earth as a food source. They installed the harvesting machinery (the tripods) and planted the crops (humans)
After a while, in their time, they came back for the harvest.
Oops, the animals were now running the farm!

Obviously, attack all of the cities with the biggest landmarks! The Empire State Building, Mount Rushmore, the Hollywood Sign, the Pyramids, and other big landmarks of no strategic value. After they have all been blown up in exciting ways, we settle in for the long war, which will soon be over as soon as the humans discover our weakness is germs, blood, cats, bullets, whatever.

I wouldn't destroy any cities. A truly advanced civilization would have other means to conquer a planet besides laying waste to it. I'd ally myself to the strongest power (which on Earth is the United States) and get it to do the grunt work of taking over the world, with the assistance of "advisors" and my high tech weapons.

This was tried back in the 1870ś President Grant turned them Down.
The Klingon revolt prevented then from offering the deal to the Russians.
