Bruce
Sorry to hear that, Bruce - I hate it when things like that happen and derail one's cartography! I'm still planning on entering, but I've decided to do a moderately different scenario at the last minute, so my entry might be a bit rushed.

As for the next round, "The Indomitables" has a few more nominations than "Air, Water, Earth, Fire" and "L'État C'est Moi", so it shall be the challenge for MotF 59! The other two are still good, so I expect one of them will be chosen for MotF 60 - I'll certainly bring them up if no one else does.

When I said my entry would be "a bit rushed" I mean "there's no way I'm going to finish this today it's just too bloody difficult". I blame Wikipedia for not having comprehensive and high-quality pages on West Africa.

A small info regarding the map duel: I now have the time to take part in it (being done with my finals and all).

Ah, yes, I almost forgot! I'll be sending you and Kaiphranos a PM about that sometime soon, I just need to decide on a good map challenge for your both.

Just out of interest, how many of you fine cartographer-artists are planning on entering MotF 59? I've decided to use all the research I did for my unused MotF 58 entry to good use, and I'm planning to enter later this week.

This would also be a good time to start discussing what challenge you fellows want for MotF 60! Feel free to repost old challenge suggestions or post new ones - I'll go over the last few pages and repost all the unused-but-popular suggestions in a day or two, if no one else does it first.

Last chance for this challenge...

In the Footsteps of Illustrious Men
Show the world, or a part of the world, at the death/retirement of a world-changing leader (monarch, president, whatever). The change he/she brought can be good, or bad, but the leader's aims must be successful. ATL leaders are encouraged, but OTL leaders can be used, as long as the outcome is ATL. ASB is a no-no, but FH is OK.

I have an idea but haven't had the motivation to start anything, and I'm not sure I want to revisit such similar themes to any other MotF maps I've made...

Well, I haven't been planning on it, per se, as a good chunk of my mapping time lately has been devoted to other projects (not to mention the looming Duel) but if we're still light on entries by the end of the week, I might be able to whip something up...

Well the contest ends on the 26th, so you've got three or four days if you want to enter.

I would've wanted to enter, but I probably shan't be able to, since I'm away and won't return until the very early Friday morning. Maybe I'll be able to do something, but I don't know. We shall have to see.

He says it's his specialty, and he seems to be much more knowledgeable than most on the subject (which doesn't require much, mind you, but still).

I actually started on a map a few days ago but Future8's map was posted before I finished and it looked alot like my map (not only the deisgn but the background story behind the map were similar as well) to an extent, so I didn't really bother continuing since people might think I copied him/her.

Ah, wunderbar! I'll have to send him a message sometime!

Anyway, here are a few of the suggestions that I liked/were popular from last time - if I've missed any, please feel free to repost them!

The Miracle
Make a map showing a country that achieved an "economic miracle" - like Germany or Japan post-WWII - that did not in OTL, or in a manner different to how it did in OTL.

The Locked Country
Make a map showing a country which has cut itself off from the rest of the world, similar to feudal Japan under the doctrine of Sakoku, or North Korea in more recent times. The map may be from the perspective of outside observers - either showing what they know about the country or speculating as to its internal structure - or it may be a map of the country from its own perspective.

Air, Water, Earth, Fire
Make a map showing the effects of an alternate history natural disaster.

L'Etat C'est Moi.
The challenge is to do a map reflecting the world, or a particular part of it, following the successes of a monarch who was unsuccessful in our timeline.

We need to choose the challenge for MotF 60 before MotF 59 ends, so here are a few old challenge suggestions that have never been chosen for a contest round:

Il Risorgimento
Make a map showing the history or effects of the unification of a nation-state, like that of Italy or Germany.

The Gun is Our Government
Make a map of a region considered stateless or anarchic showing the various tribes, warlords, gangs, and rebels that actually control the region.

Look Upon My Works, Ye Mighty, And Despair
Make a map showing a successfully built megastructure, either showing the structure itself, its location, or the political or social conditions that caused its construction.

Where The Streets Are Paved With Gold
Make a map of a region as it appears in the popular imagination of another part of the world, e.g.: the seven cities of Cibola, Prester John's kingdom, "Here Be Dragons," etc.

Posting this again, just because people will not see it if it is between a lot of other posts. Last time I'm posting this.

I'm partial to this one, since I think I originally suggested it. Also still up for either L'État C'est Moi or Air, Water, Earth, Fire.

It was already on this page, you know. And every one of the last five pages.

This would be nice to see as a challenge, seeing as how it has come close to making it several times.

I actually like this one, FWIW. I just don't think ATL leaders should be allowed, or at least not people who didn't exist IOTL. That makes the challenge a bit too open, I think. Seeing as how L'État, c'est Moi is a subspecies of this, I prefer this to that.
