Yes, at the time independence was almost forced upon them by the left-wing Dutch government. Either independence becomes a longer process or Surinam remaines an independent state within the ''kingdom' of the Netherlands (IOTL it currently has the Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles and Aruba as members).

For a direct political union you will have to have a POD in atleast the aftermath of WWII as Suriname got autonomy (within the kingdom) pretty fast. It would really be a blessing for the country as from the '60s on Surinamese politics have been rotten and nepotistic to the core.
If you simply want Suriname within the Kingdom then it's pretty easy: just kill of Prime Minster Den Uyl (political or otherwise). He was a pretty fanatical anti-colonialist.
