The Doom Bell: Belgrade Falls In 1456

"Although he was my enemy I feel grief over his death, because the world has never seen such a man."-Sultan Mehmet II, upon hearing news of the death of John Hunyadi during the Siege of Belgrade

One of the legacies of this defeat is the ringing of the Doom Bell, which is still used by some Protestent churches for solemn occasions such as funerals, to commemorate the death of Hungary's national hero.

The Ottoman Empire would continue its expansion into Central Europe with the capture of Vienna in 1529, a situation that was not reversed until what some historians call the Great Crusade of 1683.
