I think it's possible if you control a country within your sphere of influence, and you're both sufficiently more powerful than them and you get an event. But I also thought that the country being annexed had to also have one of your primary or accepted cultures as a primary culture.

Curious, on a side note I just spent my first game as Japan, having managed to become a great power in the 80s'. However the population has undergone a crash fro a peak of 7.5 mil to now just below 6 mil, apparantly all my people are running off to america after I built ports to invite the Euros to come and bolster the population.
Rather kind of funny in my opinion.

Do ports boost pop emigration/immigration?

Starting as the United States, does anyone have some good advice just for first steps when you are starting to get going? I know I need to jump into the Texas/Mexico War, any other important first steps to set it up well?

Land-grabs against Mexico, also, try to conquer and sphere as much of the Americas as possible. Ideally, by the end of the game, you should be undisputed hegemon of the entire Americas. It's not necessary to conquer any territory where you don't have cores, since you can get the greater part of the benefit through sphering. Colonies, I advise against, since Africa is on the other side of the globe, and they'll just drain resources.

If you plan on annexing beyond your cores, I'd advise Mexico; the grabs will be easier, and I think their land is less densely populated.

Should I annex South AMerica? WHich of the uncivilized terrorities should I try to get firs? China/Egypt etc.

I would advise sphering, rather than annexations for South America, they're too far to control properly. I would definitely advise constructing Panama however.

As for uncivilized territories, try China, but stick to coastal territories. Pacific dominance is also not a bad option, especially since annexation of Hawaii (which I think is event controlled) is a good first step.

Oh, and for China, I think there's one specific territory with gold mines, try and grab that one if you want Chinese territory.
