Challenge: Little Draka Domination

Starting with the 1948 National Party election, make South Africa have the following characteristics in 2004:
1) At least twice the area (nearly 1 million square miles and the largest nation on the continent)
2) Apartheid is at least still in effect, or is actually strengthened.
Perhaps a virus epidemic in the countries north of South Africa might do it?
Or maybe a nuclear war in the early Sixties (Cuban Missile War)?
