Role Models in AltHistory Fiction?

In Alt History fiction there are several types of characters. Some are the actual historical ones simply set in a different setting or situation. Some are cut from the whole cloth and seem to owe their personalities to no living person (I really don't agree with that but then most readers simply will not know or be aquainted with the person or persons who are the inspiration). Lastly there are the characters who seem to be inspired by actual historical figures but not named as such and not on situations they might or might not of found themselves in. Having reread "The Peshawar Lancers" recently I was struck by just how much Athelstane* King bears an uncanny resemblance to what IMO is on of the most interesting personas of the 19th Century. Sir Richard Burton. Soldier, explorer, diplomat and writer

Now does anybody else have a character they can name that seems inspired by people that would fit the third catagory.

*Interestingly the cover blurb on the hardcover names him as "Alfred"
