The challenge for Round 9:

Based upon this timeline . . .
1763: The southern portion of the Spanish Viceroyalty of New Spain is acquired by Great Britain and named British Tropical America.

1822-26: Amid the violent revolutionary firestorm sweeping through Spain’s colonial empire in South and North America, the 7 provinces of British Tropical America make a relatively peaceful transition from colony to autonomous nation, the Dominion of Tropicana.

1847: American soldier of fortune Jim Polk is hanged for his role is the Belizean Rebellion.

1899: Isthmian America becomes a world crossroads when the Darien Canal, in Tropicana’s Panama Province, is officially opened, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

1960: Tropicana achieves full sovereignty. Like several other former British colonies, such as Canada, the reigning British monarch is also King or Queen of Tropicana. In January 1960, following a nation-wide contest, a new flag was chosen for Tropicana.

. . . design the flag adopted in 1960 for Tropicana.

The Entries:

#1-
It was decided to retain the ensign. In place of the old green stripes a seven pointed star for each of the provinces was added. Each point was dimpled to stylise a Quetzal tail - the quetzal being symbolic for the region.

The seven stripes have been retained from the previous British ensign, however the Union flag in the canton has been replaced. The stars are the seven brightest stars in the constellation of Cancer as the country is named after the Tropic of Cancer. The laurel wreath represents the peaceful union of the country's seven provinces.

#3-
The Union Jack symbolises its status as a Commonwealth Realm. The blue field is for the blue waters of the Caribbean, Pacific, and Darien Canal. The ship symbolises its status as a centre of trade. The dragon symbolises the Aztec peoples, the major native tribe of the region when it was first conquered by the Europeans.

#4-
Unveiled May 24th, 1961 on the Victoria Day national holiday, the flag was adopted to replace the colonial flag used for Tropicana since it was adopted under Lord Harrington in 1814. The barbed diagonal is a reference to the Burgundian Cross, a nod to the still-Spanish character of Tropicana. The red and white also nods to the cross of St. George, and the English character of the land. The halves reference the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to the North-East and South-West. The central shield refers to the stalwart defense of the crown's vital interest of this trade connection during the American Expansionary War, the 2nd British-Spanish War, and The Great War. The stylized Sun disk has become the icon of the nation, much like the American star or the Canadian maple leaf.

#5-
The pale yellow represents the Atlantic sunrise and the pale red represents the Pacific sunset. The 7-pointed star represents the nation's 7 provinces and the Quetzal, Tropicana's national bird, represents the nation's people and their diverse heritage.
