Some Great AH Comic Book Titles To Check Out

Hey Everybody!!! Here are a few comic books titles that you should check out at your local comic book stories over the next few days for some fantastic reading:

A) Resurrection (Oni Press) POD: May 21, 1998. Aliens appeared over all of the major cities of Earth, and proceeded to lay waste to the planet for the next 10 years, when they mysteriously left. Unlike Independence Day, there was no "magic bullet" or computer virus to save the day...

B) Galactica 1980 (Dynamite Press) POD: January 12th, 1980. The original series Battlestar Galactica crew finds themselves in Earth orbit. Unfortunately President Carter orders a nuclear strike against the Galactica when it decides to hover over the White House. To make matters worse, the Soviets decide to panic as well...

C) Zero Killer (Dark Horse) POD: 1945. The world changed starting in 1945, with the failure to use nuclear weapons against Japan in 1945. By 1973, the world entered the Third World War during the Yom Kippur War. In 2009, the world is a post-apocalyptic nightmare. This comic title has the feel and touch of The Warriors and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome....

Here's another one for you.

Brave Old World (Wildstorm) POD: January 1, 1900. A freak accident concerning a fix for the Y2K bug sends a group of computer-science students (among others) back to fin-di-sicele (sp?) New York. The series concerns their efforts to tech up to a device that will get them back to the year 2000, all while fighting off time-travelling forces from an ATL they created. Despite the silly premise, the comic actually takes the concept quite seriously, and takes great pains to show the problems a temporally-displaced group of inventors would face.

Does The Boys count?

Whilst an ASB premise it's a brilliant comic and is woven with a lot of AH idead including the Broolyn Bridge being destoyed during 9/11 and a much more successful Japanese Kamikze campaign.

Also Savage, which comes from the same anthology that Judge Dredd features in. It's kinda like Red Dawn, but in London.

And it's predecessor Invasion...

Basically Invasion was a 2000AD strip in the 70s/80s, set during a 'Volgan' invasion in 1999. When real life 1999 came around, they just changed the name to Savage and carried on chronologically.

And now it's gone all meta, with the Americans inventing the ABC Warriors and re-invading Britain from Ireland...

That would be the mini-series Arrowsmith (Wildstorm/ DC Comics) by Kurt Busiek. If anything it also contains ATL maps of North America and Europe...

There's also Atomika (Mercury Comics), which imagines the Soviet Union creates an honest-to-Lenin god in 1927, but you're all better off giving that one a pass. The art is ugly and the melodrama makes Frank Miller seem restrained.

Here are a few titles for this week's pile of comics to look for:

A) Ignition City (Avatar Press) by Warren Ellis- This little mini-series poses the idea that starting in c.1900, heroes like Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, and the Rocket Ranger were real. Unfortunately, because of alien intervention in WWII, the world has become xenophobic and isolationist. This story is very much like Deadwood (TV) complete with violence and foul language...

B) FVZA (Radical Publishing)- This series follows the trials of a family that has been involved with the elimination of vampires and zombies through the federal government since their introduction into the United States in c.1876. They have a particularly disturbing incident taking place at the end of WWII involving the Holocaust. One nifty detail is the fact that contrary to popular myths, vampires actually lose their sex drive and hair due to transformation..

C) Deus Ex Machina (DC/Wildstorm Press)-by Michael Bendis, coming to a close in 3 months, the series follows the life of a superhero who is elected as mayor of New York City, New York, after he averts one of the 747s during the 9/11 terrorist incident. A strange blend of politics and comic book fiction....

Steampunk (unknown publisher, sorry): Rather than explain it myself, I'll let this blog post do it for me. A bit ahead of its time, which may explain why the series was never completed.

Actually, the The Red Star universe is more of an analogous fantasy world than a true AH. All the countries even have the same borders.

Here are a few more cool titles that should be picked up:

A)Unique (Platinum Press)- a man finds himself constantly shifting between our world, and an alternate world wherein civilization is afraid of sunlight and works mainly in the night. A conspiracy occurs between both worlds...

B) No Hero (Avatar Press)- starting in the 1960s, a scientist using "Super Soldier" drugs creates a series. Unilaterally, they prevent India, Pakista, France, and China from developing nuclear weapons. But through their actions they have created enemies...

C) Psycho (DC Comics) the world is changed when a "Super Soldier" drug is created bythe United States in 1941, and the first "Super Soldier" assassinates Hitler. Due to his work, the Cold War has focused on the development of "metas", licensed by different intelligence agencies...

Not Bendis - Brian Vaughn. And magnificent art by Tony Harris. Been my favorite book the last few years, and will be sad to see it end.
