Multihull yachts first

I have a passing interest in sailing yachts, and given the multihull's (and especially catamaran's) advantages of light weight, stability, interior space and level grounding, it makes me wonder if anyone would be bothering with monohulls if they hadn't been invented first.

After all, the monohull needs deeper water to float in, it needs heavy ballast to stay upright (so it usually sinks if it fills) and even then it keeps leaning over in any sort of wind. And you sit so low in the cabin you can't see much.
