DBWI: What If "Plymouth" (ABC-TV) Never Aired?

It has been 8 years since the series Plymouth (ABC-TV) was last aired, starring Dale Midkiff, Cindy Pickett, Richard Hamilton, and Perrey Reeves. Consider that before Firefly (FOX-TV), you had a successful science fiction series that acted as a successful counterpoint to the paranoia of The X-Files (FOX-TV). For many, the series served as an optimistic view of the future during the Clinton Administration. But according to imdb.com, the series almost never got aired. Apparently the TV pilot was considered one of the most expensive pilots launched by the network. Also too many executives were afriad that the series would be slaughtered by the competition created by Star Trek: The Next Generation. Yet somehow the series created its own niche audience. I know this is going to sound blasphemous to the many "Pilgrims" out there, but what if ABC-TV had decided not to air the series? What effect would there have been on the science-fiction community? What effects would there have been on the "real-life" space program?
