New Spanish Theocracy vs. Puritan Theocracy

I had an idea of a war between an oppressive Inquisition-ruled Catholic theocracy in New Spain going to war with an equally oppressive Puritan theocracy (similar to the New Commonwealth in the Puritan world TL) inhabiting the OTL US East Coast. I imagined this war would take place in modern times and would match the OTL Eastern Front of WW2 in terms of sheer bloodshed and brutality.

But how could such a scenario be achieved?
