I find it disturbing that the Japanese don't see anything wrong with it. You would think they would be a bit weary of it, considering how insane Germany has gone with avoiding anything slightly axis.

Well Japan and Germany were treated very different ways after the war.

Germany was invaded over a long period and occupied by multiple powers, (some of which utterly hated them) and was systematically rid of anything and everything relating to old regime, split into two and had a complete fundamental change to society wherein anything seen as supportive of the Axis was viewed at the samel level as murder or rape socially.

Japan was only occupied by America (for less time), remained whole and only saw changes in society in terms of support for the military.

Another thing to is that Japanese (and Asian in general) schools tend to teach about Hitler the same way we would teach about a generic historic dictator and as a resuilt their's a kind of feeling that he's a sort of inspiring figure as a result.

They must be really stupid, if they consider dumping their current logo. It looks like this:

I know, I'm Norwegian myself. I personally prefer the old logo, and think its a real shame that they want to throw away a symbol they've been using for the past five centuries, but I do understand their reasoning.

There are various reasons for why they want to change it, but it seems to boil down to the old symbol no longer having any real relevance to the people of Norway, and it being too similar to the coat of arms of Norway. (The new logo proposal was brought up in connection with plans for further separating church and state.)

They also mentioned that the axes, despite representing what killed St. Olav, are usually viewed as representations of his own axe. They don't want to be associated with militaristic Christianity, in other words.

I think they went kind of overboard. If you look closely at the new logo it has four cartoon hearts on it.

They said something about that part of the symbol being from Nidarosdomen. Dunno if the hearts were included in the "original" but if they were, it seems that the logo designers weren't the only people who went overboard.

So no one thinks that the proposed symbol is actually beautiful... though I think the black background is a little bit sinister?

The proposed symbol is shown in black and white, but it was designed with using various colour combinations in mind, apparently. If they try breaking the rule of tincture though, I'll sue the church for permanently damaging my retina.

Here's a weird one: there's an atlas from 1901, right? And they decide the German Empire is too big to fit on one map, OK? So they decide to divide it into two and cover it on two maps, east and west of the Elbe...which means the eastern part looks almost identical to a map of modern Germany.

Just looks strange with Alsace-Lorraine and the old internal borders...

Hurricane Hazel

Born in February of 1921, Hazel McCallion is 90 years old. She's the current mayor of Mississauga, Ontario, a position that she has held since 1978. She's a member of the Order of Canada, and one of the few non-German members of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. She's one of the longest serving elected leaders in history. She won 76% of the vote in the last mayoral election in 2010.

Here's a picture:

Did you know that Nebraska has a navy?

Quote:
In 1931, then Nebraska Lieutenant Governor Theodore W. Metcalf found himself to be Acting Governor for several weeks. To please some of his friends, he appointed "20 to 25 prominent Nebraskans" as Admirals; hence, the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska was born...

Quote:
And I [the Governor of Nebraska] do strictly charge and require all officers, seamen, tadpoles and goldfish under your command to be obedient to your orders as Admiral—and you are to observe and follow, from time to time, such directions you shall receive, according to the rules and discipline of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska.

Since when is the Order of Merit German? And since when are there any Federal German Orders?

Edit: Okay no I know the meaning of "merit"

It's real. The airship in question is the USS Los Angeles (ZR-3) (don't tell me you posted that after I posted the link, Thande ). From Wiki:
Quote:
On August 25, 1927, while tethered at the Lakehurst high mast, a gust of wind caught the tail of the Los Angeles and lifted it into colder, denser air that was just above the airship. This caused the tail to lift higher. The crew on board tried to compensate by climbing up the keel toward the rising tail, but could not stop the ship from reaching an angle of 85 degrees, before it finally descended. Amazingly, the ship suffered only slight damage and was able to fly the next day.
