The 1801 Russo-French plan to invade British India from the north. Despite the fact that they didn't even have any maps of the area they would have to cross to get there.

Wong Family Crest. This is a perfect example of multiculturalism and assimilation in my opinion.

When Fiji became a republic in 1987, they kept the old motto of "Fear God and Honour the Queen"...and they still have it.

On a somewhat related note; as joked in the Double Dragons cartoon, I am amused that a chinese and american last name is the same.. 'Lee'.

How come it became an american name of 'whiteys'?

Don't forget the common Korean names often Romanized as "Park" and "Kim". In fact, Lee (/Rhee/Yi) is found in Korea too.

The Fulani's history is a bit odd as well. Only 200 years ago they were the fearsome Islamic conquerors of West Africa, now the other West Africans look on them like Europeans do gypsies.

Gee, guys, it's not that hard, just follow the sun until we reach the sea. We can bring a few cows with us: we can kill one every 100 km, and when the natives get angry at it, we've arrived.

A lot of rulers are alleged to descend from deities. The Japanese are allegedly descended from Amateratsu. The Merovingians were descended according to some from Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

Apparently a Romanian sect claims the Romanovs were descended from the Archangel Michael....

Lee is a spelling variant of 'Leigh/Ley', the obsolete, native English word for 'meadow'.

Granted, it is one of those hilarious language coincidences....reminds me of the line Kang and Kodos had from the first Simpsons Halloween special on Rigelian being exactly the same as English through an astonishing coincidence...

In the Tamil language, the noun "emdena" refers to a person who is particularly cunning. The word is derived from the harrowing escapades of the SMS Emden, a wildly successful German raider that operated in the Indian Ocean during WWI.

Well, within a few months they sunk ~ 40 enemy freighters (causing a temporary hold of the shippment of ANZAC forces to Egypt) and an Russian cruiser and shelled Madras.

Shortly before beeing sunk it had detached an landing party, that then proceeded to seize an decommisend schooner and escape with it to Arabia (there fighting their way through the arab uprising to Constantinopel).
