I suspect this is a joke, but humour like this doesn't translate well over the internet.

One reason human beings have accomplished as much as they have is that their brains are so large. (that's not the only reason, but that's the one I am looking at here) A Smurf would not be possible under the laws of real science, because its brain would be too small--the Smurfs would not have language, culture, technology, etc. And how do you imagine they would have evolved?

For these reasons, Smurfs do indeed belong in the ASB forum.

The connection of brain size to intelligence is controversial. Women have smaller brain sizes than men, but it doesn't have an effect on IQ. There are also some ethnic groups with significantly smaller brain sizes than the norm, with no discernable effect on intelligence.

I believe that its brain size to body size ratio that is most important, as it frees up brain matter for cognitive tasks. So, I don't think it's impossible for an intelligent organism to have brains that small.

Then again, this is a thread about freaking smurfs here so I suppose it doesn't really matter.

It DOES matter, because this is in the "normal" AH discussion, not in ASB. In the normal world, there are reasons why small creatures, (a smurf being about the size of, say, a mouse), did not evolve human-level intelligence. I may not know all the details, but the brain of such a creature is simply too small--we are talking teeny tiny little brains, not the small difference between men and women or otherwise between one person and another.

Obviously brain size isn't the only thing--Neanderthals had bigger brains than humans, as do elephants, whales, etc. But a certain minimum brain size would be necessary, which smurfs wouldn't have. That's why this is pure ASB.

No, smurfs don't exist- but neither do any of the alternate timelines we come up with in any of these threads. This thread was a joke, I think, so it doesn't really matter whether it was posted here or in ASB, because, if I'm correct about the thread being a joke, then whoever posted it in the first place doesn't actually care what we think about a world in which smurfs existed (and neither does anyone, I would venture to say). Rather than campaign to have this thread moved to a more appropriate board, why don't we contribute to more meaningful discussions? Or go outside for a bit.
