It's a cliffhanger!

Anyways, I've been working on the makeup of the House (still). With the 218-217 majority (including 5 independents!), it might be the slimmest majority in American history (there's a couple of 221s).

I've worked out all the parties and have 162 names (that leaves 273 Congressmen yet-to-be-named). The party equalizing wasn't so hard. After I got all the names, and placed them in the correct district (if given) or a district from OTL that seems reasonable to expect it swinging the same in the TWW universe, I then went through the current party-to-district layout, pretty much copied it with a few exceptions, and was about 23 seats off at the outset. I went back to include seats that were Republican before our 2008 election and was 12 seats off. Then I took a sample of the seats that turned Democrat in 2004 and got the realistic and believable (I think so) layout.

Most of the first names were created by me, but none of the last names (outside of Hubert "Arkansas" Smith) are. As you can imagine, I'm a bit wiped out from spending the evening/morning coming up with WASPy names. If there's a mistake in the list, or how I came up with something, feel free to tell me, and I'll explain my reasoning better and/or correct it.

Without further ado, here's what I got in (I hope) a better format:

Alabama - 7 Seats
  • 5 Republicans: 1 (Stanley Valence), 3, 4, 5, 6 (Roger Callahan)

I already sent you a PM earlier (in response to your PM that stated the same thing), but to anyone else, the gist of it is that, outside of the Joseph Furman article, I've never written a full Wikipedia article for the images I've made, just the intro or the snippet or what-have-you. And their made pretty simply, with Wikipedia know-how, Save Preview, Print Screen button, Paint.NET (or any imaging software), copy-and-paste, minor cosmetic changes, save image, upload attachment. I was more detailed in Eric's PM, but if anybody has more questions feel free to ask.

And I'm glad Bartlet's okay. I wrote a West Wing 2027 timeline a few years ago (which has been quadruply negated by this thread), and I always had Bartlet dying in 2010. I don't like being psychic in that regard, and I already have Jim Hohner's soul on my conscience.

Heated views in second London Mayoral debate

The candidates for London Mayor squared up in the second debate held tonight by SKY NEWS at the London Metropolitan University in Islington.
The six candidates clashed over the Mayoral Salary, and Gerald Fox's prospal to extend the congestion charge scheme into South London and further into West London.
Henry Reed's decision to say that if he was elected Mayor he would give the salary to chairty was attacked by Ben Stanley who called it a "cheap gimmick". "Unlike you and Mayor Fox I am not a millionaire" "I would reduce the salary, but I need the salary".
Reed hit back "First of all I only want to give something back to this City and it's people. Yes, I have earnt money, although I am not the millionaire, Ben claims, and he seems to have something against a working class bloke achieving in life".
Fox defended Reed again, calling Stanley "dangerous, with his comments likely to cause furher division in the City, not heal them".
On the suggested enlargement of the Congestion charge, Stanley backed Fox's scheme"I agree ith it, and if elected would also carry it out" whilst both Reed and Arthur Brooks said the scheme "would harm jobs and small traders the most" "It's another tax, just called a different name".
Liberal Democrat Jo Blake struggled at times to get heard as the major three candidates slugged it out. She said that "it was like schoolboys fighting in the playground" and that "Londerers need sober judgement and a new way forward".
Arthur Brooks and Gerald Fox clashed when the Mayor called him "a man with only policy's of hate". Brooks hit back by saying that both him and Stanley "had betrayed the City".
Guy Pearson looks like a man who knows he is not going to win, but seems determined to stop Henry Reed from winning "I am afraid that all the candidates other than me are failures, we need a fresh change, a new broom".

Walken running mate "to be announced within the next two weeks"

CNN has learnt that Glenn Allen Walken will announce his choice for Vice-President within the next two weeks.
We understand that the choice is now down to three candidates, strongly believed to be Texas Senator Liz Clark,Connecticut Senator and Former Governor Howard Niering and Minnesota Governor Micheal Jack.
It looks like that Ohio Congresswomen Ruth Norton-Stewart and Utah Governor John Elderton have not made the final three.
The final three candidates will be interviewed by Walken himself along with Celeb Burgess, Jane Braun and Anne Stark.
Sources within the Walken team have rubbished internet stories that Walken would choose Ray Sullivan, Mike Reed or even as one site has suggested Wesley Burke.

ALEXANDER AND WOODSIDE.Com
A New Kind of Politics Blog

Saturday April 4th
3.OO pm from the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, Los Angeles, CA

Just checking in to let you know that the General has called former President Bartlet's staff at Parkland Medical Center in Derry, New Hampshire to offer his condolences to President Bartlet's condition. As previously reported, President Bartlet suffered what was believed to be an MS attack late Thursday evening.

The General and Bartlet have a long working history together, beginning in 1999 when Bartlet recalled him from the Phillippines Crisis to 2003 when he became one of Bartlet's strongest military advisors as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As the only presidential candidate to have worked under President Bartlet, General Alexander spoke in front of a crowd this morning, expressing interest in continuing the legacy of the Bartlet era.

The General also forwarded Congressman Woodside's wishes to the Bartlet family. Although Congressman Woodside never had the same working relationship the General had, only meeting with President Bartlet's staff a few short times and experiencing a scattered amount of photo ops, he did help shape President Bartlet's policy with regards to ANWR.

Pope will visit Derry, New Hampshire

In a surprise announcement, Pope Victor IV will visit Derry, New Hampshire at the end of the week. This moves up his planned "apostolic journey" (state visit) to the United States from later this year. Presumably, he will still visit Washington, DC, New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles, although the various cities will have to scramble to make the proper arrangements four months earlier than expected.

With his stop in Derry, where former President Bartlet has been hospitalized, the Pope will be one of several world dignitaries who have visited Bartlet since his MS attack on Thursday. Presidents Walken and Newman have already arrived in Derry, and former British Prime Minister Richard Meyer will arrive on Monday. President Bartlet, a devout Catholic, was in contact with the Pope throughout his presidency from 1999 to 2007. Pope Victor's last two visits to America were in 1999 and 2003, where he met with President Bartlet both times. He had with met President Santos in early 2008 on a state visit to Italy.

Sullivan Refuses to Rule Out Second VP Run

Governor Ray Sullivan sparked a surprise yesterday when he refused to rule himself out of the running for the Vice-Presidential slot on the Republican Presidential ticket alongside Glen Walken.

Sullivan, who was making his first appearance on Meet the Press since ending his bid for the Presidency, told David Gregory that “he hadn’t spoken to him (Walken) about it, but I’m a patriot and have always stuck by the mantra that I will serve in any capacity I can, if I’m asked.”

Over the weekend the Walken camp seemed to give mixed signals on whether Sullivan was under consideration with insiders saying that he hadn’t been considered. That appeared to be contradict those statements whilst talking of her “admiration” for Sullivan and suggesting that he had indeed been vetted by saying “after five years in public spotlight we didn’t need to do too much investigation.”

The 2006 Vice-Presidential nominee found further support amongst leading figures in the Republican Party over the weekend with Kansas Senator Sam Wilkinson suggesting that Sullivan would be a tremendous pick and would ensure the strongest possible ticket going into the election.

If Sullivan remains in consideration it would appear that the Walken camp have narrowed their selection to five viable candidates. Sources close of Utah Governor John Elderton have dismissed claims that he is no longer under consideration suggesting that he remains a strong contender alongside Texas Senator Liz Clark, Minnesota Governor Michael Jack and Connecticut Senator Howard Niering.

Sullivan For VP – The Story That Won’t Die

By Sadie Cantanero

Despite ongoing denials from numerous sources and a strong belief within the beltway that it’s the longest of long shots – stories suggesting that Republican nominee Glen Walken will ignore all conventional wisdom and select his former opponent Governor Ray Sullivan as his running mate simply won’t die.

For reasons that remain unclear Sullivan appears to have emerged from the Primary season having gained Walken’s respect and has gradually moved from opponent to advisor in the space of only a couple of months.

At Walken’s recent highly publicized party gathering in Missouri many advisors were struck by just how much time Walken spent with the 2006 Vice-Presidential nominee and insiders have suggested that Sullivan has been present on a number of key strategic teleconferences over the past few weeks.

None of this is to suggest that Walken has indeed decided that Sullivan will be the VP but it does add credence to the online speculation that suggests the Governor is higher in the former acting President’s thoughts than anyone will publicly admit.

The major reason that Sullivan remains a contender seems to be an internal disagreement on Walken’s team about the other leading candidates.

Former Georgia Governor Caleb Burgess who is leading the search is believed to favor Texas Senator Liz Clark and has the support of Walken’s campaign manager Anne Stark. Jane Braun, the campaign’s political director, is thought to favor Minnesota Governor Michael Jack whom she believes can help deliver the North Star state to Walken in November. Finally, Senator Matt Hunt, the national co-chair is still believed to be pushing the candidacy of Utah Governor John Elderton who may be able to help in the west and in Nevada in particular.

The lack of certainty may have opened the door for Sullivan as a consensus candidate.

Former Thai Dictator, killed in Bangkok
By Ian Cravey
The former Military Dictator, General Hang Thok, was shot and killed in a dramatic ambush near Bangkok. The fmr US ally, who led a military regime from 1994 to 2001, was known for his crackdown on Islamic militants, and supression of the Free Press. The former leader lost in a close and disputed election in 2003, in which his Thai National Peoples Party lost to the Progressive Socialist Alliance. He was also detained on charges of plotting a coup in 2007. His regime was known for widespread human rights abuse, and torture, but always denied this publicly.

The Ambush took place late last night, when a convoy carrying him was ambushed. Reports that a bomb on the side of the road first exploded, followed by 20-30 insurgents armed with AK-47's and RPG's attacking the 4 car convoy, and a autopsy revealed he was shot 12 times, and was alive for 4 hours afterwords. There has been mixed re-action in Thailand, but the government has condemed the assassination, and his wife blames it on agents from Laos.

Laos condemmed the attack, but has always had a shakey relationship with Thailand, where Gen. Hang Thok alledgedly massacred villagers in a brutal but brief war in 1988. His son, Hang Hai Thok was injured in the attack, and one of the cars in the convoy was destroyed by the bomb.

Transcript of the press conference with Dr. Keith Jarvis, the personal physician to former President Josiah Bartlet:

JARVIS : Good afternoon, I'm Dr. Keith Jarvis, Chief of Medicine for the Parkland Medical Center and long-time personal physician to President Josiah Bartlet. As reported last Friday, President Bartlet suffered a relapse of multiple sclerosis. As you all know, the former President suffers from the relapsing-remitting subtype of MS. Since diagnosed in 1993, his condition has been fairly stable. The only obvious symptoms in the last few years, aside from occassional bouts, was a weakening of the legs, vision problems with his left eye, and increased fatigue, all of which began after his last major incident in the spring of 2006. I am unhappy to report that with this latest bout, President Bartlet has been completely paralyzed below the waist and has lost all vision from his left eye, as well as some minor motor control issues. As his condition has stabilized, it appears unlikely that President Bartlet will regain use of his legs, left eye, and complete motor control in the future. His neurological functions have been tested, and we have not found any signs of intellectuall or mental deterioration. Mentally, he is as fit as the day I met him. With the initial reports of President Bartlet's attack, it was feared that his MS has moved onto the second, final stage of secondary progressive MS. Typically, MS evolves from relapsing remitting into secondary progressive after a period of 19 years, which nearly matches the known history of President Bartlet. Luckily, as of yesterday, his condition has stabilized and he appears to be in complete remission once more, albeit with the paralysis, partial blindness, and motor issues. I will open up the floor to questions.

CONCANNON: Danny Concannon, New York Times. Did Mrs. Bartlet participate in the treatments?

JARVIS: From my understanding, Mrs. Bartlet has been administering betaseron, a common interferon treatment, to President Bartlet for the last several years. She was consulted, obviously, but was not a member of the medical team treating the President here at Parkland.

GRIMES: Frank Grimes, Manchester Union Leader. In your words, what exactly happened during President Bartlet's MS attack?

JARVIS: Around three pm Thursday afternoon, President Bartlet experienced several seizures on his farm outside of Manchester. The exact time of the attack is unknown, as he was alone, but he was soon discovered by a member of his Secret Service detail. He continued experiencing intermittent seizures and paralyses for several hours as he was brought to Parkland Medical Center here in Derry and we attempted to stabilize his condition, slowing down his neurological functions in order to stop the symptoms. The attack was brought on by slow demyelination, the destruction of the myelin sheaths surrounding nerve cells, which along with the scarring, or "scleroses," is typical in MS patients. He went into remission early Friday morning and completely stabilized by Saturday.

CARSON: Meredith Carson, Fox News. When you say stabilized, do you mean he's awake?

JARVIS: As I said, we performed complete neurological tests on President Bartlet, so yes, he is awake and in full command of his neurological abilities. He is with his family right now, his wife, brother and three daughters, as well as a few close friends, I believe a Mr. Marbury as well as Mr. Toby Ziegler are among them.

MEANEY: Colm Meaney, NBS. Isn't President Santos and former Acting President Walken here as well?

JARVIS: I do not have a full list of the visitors to President Bartlet, although I can tell you both Santos and Walken have arrived at the hospital either today or yesterday. President Santos met with President Bartlet this morning, and has been dealing with, I believe, issues involving Thailand most of this morning. In fact, he may have even consulted President Bartlet on the issue, but I believe he is with his aides elsewhere in Derry at the moment.

(a Secret service agent whispers into Jarvis' ear)

JARVIS: Excuse me, I am not to discuss President Santos' or Walken's current whereabouts. Sorry. I must also cut this press conference short. Our press office will be completely at your disposal for any further questions in written form. Thank you for your time.

Rock Hill Post
April 27th
Carl Cramer
Today, Presidential Canidate Matt Santos stopped briefly at the Country Kitchen Restraunt in Rock Hill in York County. While at the restraunt, he made a few brief coments about polling in York County, where he is in the lead, 72% to 38%. He also condemmed the assassination of the former Thai President, but condemmed the tactics of Hang Thoks regime, and called for Laos to use restraint as a potential crisis grows.

Is Fitzsimmons Going to New Hampshire?
Tim O'Sullivan, Boston Globe.

While much of the media world is focused on former President Josiah Bartlet's MS attack and recovery, a piece of political information may have slipped in under their noses. Boston Mayor Jimmy Fitzsimmons is rumored to be heading to Manchester to meet with President Matt Santos, possibly along with White House Chief of Staff Nate Singer and DNC Chairman Josh Lyman.

Fitzsimmons is immensely popular in both Boston and the Democratic Party, but created a division when he endorsed former Secretary of State Lewis Berryhill over President Santos in the primary. This could be a sign that Santos is looking to smooth over any rough patches within the party before the convention.

Well, used to have it until they realized Ray Lewis was the only one winning it.
