A Mongol Austro-Indonesian Empire

In 1292 Kublai Khan launched a thousand ship invasion of Java. His fleet was badly damaged by a typhoon along the way and the weakened force was eventually driven from Java.

What if the invasion was much more successful and Java fell to Kublai? Could we see a Mughal style transformation of the region? Perhaps the Mongols will continue to expand to neighboring islands. With the massive Chinese built fleet and the wealth of Java at their disposal, the Mongols may eventually conquer Sumatra and the Malay peninsula and colonize Australia.

With the end of Mongol rule in China, the southern colonies would become independent. This Java-Khanate would make a very large maritime empire.

Yuan invasion of Java IOTL was actually quite successful at a degree, if only Wijaya didn't back stab them in the end... But even if the Yuan invasion was more successful, you won't going to see them controlling all of East Java immediately afterwards. Some important northern ports can befall into their direct control, and of course they can count some local adipatis and akuwus as allies but it'd be best for them to befriend with the Maduranese. And the most important matter is about how to prevent the Mongols from being back stabbed by Wijaya or anyone. And that will just for the Yuan army to only maintain their presence. If it's to have Mongolian control consolidated over all of the East Java you would need to have most of the local lords (including Wijaya) view the Mongol presence in East Java in more positive light, but it shouldn't be very difficult, only that it'll be a gamble. Wijaya would be slightly harder, of course, considering that his charisma was actually why some of the powerful lords chose to swear allegiance to him.

Besides the expedition was intended mainly to punish Kertanegara's insolence in the first place. It's safe to expect the Mongols being satisfied only by having the Javanese be all good boys and pay tribute to the Emperor at Khanbalik.

With a more successful Mongols in Java, no matter how more successful it'd be compared to OTL as long as Majapahit can be prevented from rising, then the consequences will be quite great for the whole South East Asia overall. Samudra Pasai wouldn't be conquered, and thus the development of Islam in South East Asia shouldn't be slowed down, in fact it will be even more boosted, at least in the Malaccan strait region at first. Sundanese Pajajaran Kingdom in West Java will going to have more chance to obtain greater glory in the absence of Majapahit and Srivijaya should be able to breath slightly longer ITTL as well.
