There's a section of South America where three states (can't remember which ones) intersect, the governments are weak, and agents of Hezbollah and possibly AQ have been spotted.

Something tells me that won't be a viable hiding spot anymore if AQ wipes out the Vatican.

This is one of a few actions - along with Jewish or Christian fanatics blowing up the Dome of the Rock or a non-Muslim power nuking Mecca - that would cause a true clash of civilization and a very long global religious war. There would be pogroms against Muslims and Arabs across Europe and Latin America, increased terrorism, and certain military action by the West, which is far more likely to be seen as a crusade by the Muslim world given the nature of Al Qaeda's target.

I would think things would be worse in Western Africa where Catholicism is a major religion and resides fairly well side by side with Islam.

I don't think any 'Holy War' would be fought along conventional means though. Maybe you'd get terrorist attacks committed by both sides.
That would create an interesting spin on the War on Terror.

You also forgot attacking the Church of the Holly tomb in Jerusalem for a hotspot of equal importance with the atack against Vatican City.
