Retrospective Democratic Primaries: 2008 (US)

Who would you vote for?

  • Total voters
    79
  • Poll closed .
Knowing what you know now would you still vote for Barack Obama for the nomination? Would you support Hillary Clinton? Dennis Kucinich? Or one of the lesser known candidates?

Voted Kucinich.

The way I see it is Kucinich is far more in the democratic establishment and probably more liberal as a hole *based on his record from 98*? in the house and when he was the youngest mayor of Cleveland. He is pretty principled and consistent and even when deregulation was all of the rage during the 80s he yelled *in futility* against it. The way I see it, if we have someone more in the establishment, more flexible, more willing to play the "game", with more experience, the democrats can get more done while they still have a majority in the house and senate. Give kennedy some better health and we could see the Democrats using cloture in the senate repeatedly and pushing through massive healthcare reform. The Republicans may not be able to take a majority in either chamber in 2010.

Why I like Hillary

She has experience as Senator.

She has good bipartisan relations on the Hill.

She connects better to "blue collar" voters. (The people Obama said "clung to their guns and religion.")

Also I would love to see Hillary as President, so she could rub it in the faces of the people who tried to destroy her back in the 90's.

Bill Richardson would be a good VP pick.
Wishing you well, his majesty,
The Scandinavian Emperor

Kucinich, because he's the only one here who even close to represents my political views.

For the record, I was a Hillary Clinton supporter at the time.

Still voting Obama. In my heart, I want Kucinich, but I don't think he's electable, sadly. I see no reason why Hillary would be any less of an appeasing DLC Democrat than Obama has been, or why conservative resistance to her would be any less fierce. Edwards, knowing what I know about him now, is right out. Gravel's entertaining but he's a nut, Richardson's an interesting possibility but I still support Obama over him, and Biden and Dodd are not exactly canidates to excite the nation or become great "crisis presidents" IMO.

Kucinich is very electable. Despite people screaming at the top of their lungs that Obama was a communist non-american secret muslim and he called part of his base people who "clung to guns and religion", he still won handily.

Perhaps Kucinich takes Obama as VP and we can see him sweep handily?

Voted for Clinton the first time...voting for her the second time. I just think she has a stronger will power than Obama.

Hillary would be guaranteed a second term (though Obama pretty much is, she wouldn't need to worry about the chance of her single biggest accomplishment being declared unconstitutional, because she wouldn't have attempted to pass it in her first term). Furthermore, w/o Universal HC the GOP sweep is lessened and they probably don't regain control of the House, no gov't shutdown.

For the liberals out there: HC would be attempted at the beginning of her second term with Pelosi and Reid still as the two party bosses by Hillary's side

For Republicans like me: the biggest incentive is a better foreign policy, a delayed HC Bill, and more experience going into the job.

I doubt Clinton would ever pass universal health care. Obviously some sort of reform but me thinks it would be more like Emmanuel suggested rather then something as extensive as Obama's.

I don't know. Kucinich is actually pretty much a socialist, while Obama is far from it. With Obama, I think moderates could see the "Communist!" argument was bullshit. With Kucinich, I'm not sure they could. Also, while I think he's awesome, Kucinich definately lacks Obama's charisma.

Clinton. Unlike Obama, she would know how uncompromising Repubs would be considering Billy experienced the same shit Obama did.

As a Republican, I must at least foreign policy-wise the Obama years have not been bad at all. So I go for the "devil I know".

Obama's the one.I'd have loved to vote for Dennis Kucinich but he would have likely lost to John McCain. I would have been alright with John Edwards at the time also but knowing what I now know .The Democrats dodged a bullet with him. Hillary Clinton is perfectly qualified to be president but I have a issue with presidential dynasties actually. Surely in a country of 300 million people we can find people besides the sons, spouses or whatever of former presidents to be president. Of course I would have voted for her over McCain/Palin any day but I'm glad I didn't have to.
