If Trotsky won

Isn't it commonly accepted on this site that Trotsky didn't have the friends in the Politburo to succeed Lenin?

I think the aforementioned lack of friends in the politburo, and even if he did win his method of spreading the revolution would screw over the soviets.

Bob Conquest, with his sectarian eye for interpersonal squabbles, goes over at length how Trotsky never had a chance in Great Purge. Given Conquest's attention to minutae, even though he's pre-archival, I'm with Conquest on this.

Trotsky's personality alienated the lefts, caused ruptures with the centrists and rights, insulted Stalin whose organisational capacities were magnificent, and yet Trotsky was unwilling to appeal to the party mass—let alone the class—in a factional sense. Trotsky's decision to be "inside" was pretty much during the Left Communist / Workers Opposition debate over factionalism inside the Party and the issue of the class.

yours,
Sam R.
